Words That Move Us: Bringing Literacy to Life Through Dance
In February, I had the pleasure of leading a full-day professional learning workshop at The Dance Foundation in Birmingham, Alabama, for a dynamic group of arts educators, dance teachers, and teaching artists. This integrated arts workshop focused on bringing literacy to life through movement, drawing inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic 1968 “Mountaintop” speech and Collage Dance Collective’s RISE, choreographed by Kevin Thomas.
Grounded in the Dance Education Laboratory (DEL) model, the workshop explored strategies for integrating dance and literacy standards across grade levels. Participants engaged in embodied practices that supported language development, vocabulary acquisition, and reading comprehension, all through the lens of powerful, movement-based learning.
It was a joy to collaborate with such passionate educators committed to deepening student engagement through the arts.
